Greetings to my brothers and sisters in Christ,
I would like to begin by thanking you all for the generosity that you show to our parish in time, talent, and treasure. We read in Matthew 6:21, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." I can see that your heart is with Jesus Christ and His Church. I am constantly humbled by the response that you always give when there is a need in the church.
The last thing a pastor wants to do is to bring forth a capital campaign, and yet here I am, your humble servant, beginning a capital campaign for all the deferred maintenance needs of our buildings and property. I have spoken with the Finance Committee and have submitted to them the needs for this campaign. This is not an endeavor that we enter into lightly, but with much prayer.
As you may know, our buildings are older and in need of repairs, and renovations to ensure that they will last for a long time to come. The church is our newest building, built in 1955. The rectory was built in 1872, and the center was built around 1873. The last major work on renovations and repairs took place in the mid-90s, with some small repairs since.
Currently, the hot water tank in the church needs to be replaced; we are working on getting quotes on this. We are also looking at going with a direct hot water solution rather than another tank. The roof at the rectory has failed and we lost a second-floor hallway ceiling a couple rainstorms ago. The roof at the Saint Ann Center is failing and we are losing shingles weekly; this one is also in need of replacement. The tiles in the church hall, stairwells, under the pews, and in the choir loft are letting go and are made of asbestos. There is no immediate danger, but if it continues and becomes airborne, there is a health risk. All this must be removed and replaced with an epoxy flooring for longevity. The windows in all three buildings, in the church the basement windows, all need to be replaced because they are single paned, have air leaks, or not opening and closing properly. Multiple outside and inside doors in all three buildings need to be replaced because they are falling apart, the wood is cracked, and they have major air leaks causing heating and A/C to leak from the buildings.
These are just a few of the projects that need immediate attention, but I am including a list of all the deferred maintenance projects that need to be completed; for safety, energy efficiency, and security. You may be asking yourself about the Saint Ann property. Currently, we do not have any bites to purchase. I am working with the diocese to try and increase viewing and attractiveness of this property. There are many limitations for the property due to zoning, rules, and regulations of the town. When sold the money will go to paying off the outstanding cathedraticum, property insurance, DEF loan, realtor fees, creating a sizeable endowment for future stability of the parish, and completing future work in the body of the church.
